Your career is something that will be with you for a large part of your life. During your twenties, you lay the foundations for your career and if possible, it’s a good idea to try avoiding the most typical mistakes people tend to make during this time. While you won’t be able to avert them all, and really learning the hard way is sometimes good for you, this article will help you to at least be alert to the potential for bad career mistakes.
- Be focused
You must learn to focus on what you what to achieve so that you can actually know exactly the heights you want to attain in your career. Lack of focus on your career goals and mission is possibly one of the worst mistakes you can make; especially if you’re too concerned with doing what someone else has done; living up to their expectations instead of having expectations of your own; or following in their footsteps without being sure that doing that is what is best for you.
I’ve seen people goaded into professions that they have no interest in by their parents, guardians and at times mentors. People have become doctors not because they want to but because it is a tradition or it is expected for them to become doctors. Your inner circle may mean well and want the best for you but ALL you can do is listen to your inner self to figure out exactly what and who it is you want to be.
If it doesn’t call to your inner self, don’t go ahead and do it. Life is too short to yield to the confines of tradition!
- Understand that there are rotten days and even more terrible mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes and everyone had really bad days. There are days you will just want to sing and act out the “Lazy Song” because you may just be exhausted. There are other days you will step out of bed and everything just seems wrong; you break stuff, the figures don’t add up, your business presentation seems like you didn’t prepare at all, you’re cranky and easily irritated and then you say stuff you don’t mean and end up regretting. These things happen (a lot) but you must realize and understand that there will always be bad days and mistakes will always be made especially when your career is just in its early stages.
Like a very wise person once said “don’t carry your mistakes around with you, instead, place them under your feet and use them as stepping stones”. The biggest career mistake you can make is to see the mistakes you have made as mistakes that will forever ruin your career. You should realize that these mistakes should not be seen as career ‘destroyers’ unless there’s embezzlement, espionage and weighty stuff like that involved. But then if that were the case, you definitely would not be reading this.
When you make mistakes, apologize, rectify and get over them. Don’t dwell so much on your mistakes that you forget to learn from them.
- Creating a balance for your career and life is very important
I know there are people who have lost or destroyed important relationships because they couldn’t balance their career and the rest of their lives properly. This may sound odd but in my short career life, one key lesson I’ve learnt is to never put my career above the rest of my life. Work should not come first, second and third for you; it’s not healthy at all and it’s one of the worst career mistakes you can ever make.
You should find and create a balance between everything that matters to you, your career inclusive. Your career choice should create enough room for family, love, laughter, hobbies, travel, relaxation and rest. The thing about work is it loves owning people’s souls and even making them lose sight of other very important factors that make a man or woman’s life worth living. You can’t afford to sell your soul to work, work, work, you need to live, love, and laugh too.
If work already comes first, second and third to you, then you need to rectify that as soon as possible. Make living and working fun.
I hope these 3 career tips are truly unforgettable and help you out. You can also share and like. Gracias!
